Time management skills for what?

Time management skills - How to say no - How to delegate - Ability to avoid procrastination - Decision making skills

Time management skills also answers the question: How much power of control do you have over your time?

Both from the view of your personal attributes and from the limitations set by the outer world?

Power of control is actually none of the classic skills for time management, but best skills don’t help if they can't be applied.

First the most important skills:

  • Decision making
  • Saying no
  • Delegating
  • Assertiveness
  • Sense of order
  • Discipline
  • Goal orientation
  • Able to avoid procrastination
  • Organizing
  • Other skills like capacity for teamwork, having modern IT tools off pet and more

As you see in this time management skills list I do not clearly discern between skills and personal attributes, because in this discussion it is not so important. Any of the above listed skills is learnable to a certain extent.

Every even small improvement is a step towards better managing time too.

The time management skills as the groundwork of activities define the quality of your activities.

“A skill (also called talent) is the learned capacity to carry out pre-determined results often with the minimum outlay of time, energy, or both.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skill

“Carrying out” is an activity expression.

Activitiy only says activity, the what that doesn't carry any information about possibility, how to, quality and so on. Skills highlight the quality behind, the how of the activities, the aspects to observe.

To which extent you can influence time management depends on various facts.

Where are you able to fully approve the superiority of your existing skills?

Every human being is using time management, may it be consciously or not. It will be used in different areas of living. Home, organizational clubs, and most important at work.

This site, mainly focuses on occupational issues of time management, but naturally cover all areas of possible application. (time doesn’t know where it is managed)

How much power of control does one have over its working time? How much influence may one have on timing his/her workday?

These are important questions you have to answer prior to deciding your concept of time management use.

You possibly need no special time management for the work at an assembly line in a factory. You also may face no time management use, as CEO with a secretary, planning and managing all dates for you.

Both extremes face one “advantage”: others do time management for you.

Between these extremes most people more or less depend on an individual time management use, whether they do it according to a sophisticated system or by the mere use of a sheet of paper or from memory.

I guess you are among those people who will improve their usage of time to live off a more balanced and stress poor life.

There don’t exist any recommendations, which system to use, at which power of control. So far I am not sure, if any system at all takes care of your individuality, and your personal incomparable situation.

However, make a quick check:

  • How many tasks you can move temporally on your own decision?
  • How often you may say no without losing your job?
  • How much of your duties you may delegate?
  • Do you need to accomplish all alone?
  • Alternatively, may you count on someone´s help?

You will quickly know on a gut level, if and roughly what kind of method can support your work and goals if you didn’t use any so far.

If you already have been using time management then check, if all the things you learned and are doing to save time are still valid and pay off in which way.

Check, what you may omit without degrading your efficiency.

Now, being clear with your power of control after the quick check and other considerations, you may easily say, which skills at all are required and applicable for your work.

You know on which skills you should work to improve the performance of your time management and therefore of your whole work.

Again you see wrong premises would produce wrong results. What if you are not allowed to say no in your job (without losing it)?

Well meant advice doesn't solve such problems. However, being aware of the fact hopefully allows you to develop alternate strategies to manage your time.

Self-knowledge is the first step toward improvement.
